About the Project

Purpose Capital collaborated closely with the J.W. McConnell Family Foundation to design and launch RECODE, an ambitious initiative to establish social innovation ecosystems on higher education campuses across Canada, and to connect them through the launch of the RECODE National Network.

On campuses, RECODE will support the creation of social innovation zones – support ecosystems that incubate student social enterprises and engage impact investors in new opportunities, while offering all students a chance to try their hand at social entrepreneurship. The National Network will complement and leverage campus activity by establishing a national entity within higher education that provides critical resources, convenings and wraparound supports to advance systems change.

RECODE is a call to social innovation – to redesign public institutions from the inside out; to disrupt business as usual; to found and grow new social enterprises; to create partnerships across institutional and sectoral boundaries – in short, to ‘recode’ our culture’s operating systems in order to achieve a more just, sustainable and beautiful world.
